A Different Perspective—Headstands

This headstand is part of the closing sequence of the Ashtanga Yoga method.

When I do this posture the world feels and looks different. It’s not surprising as I am upside down and it sure provides a different perspective.

Headstands boost blood flow. Being in an inverted position, you’re sending oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to your head—this helps with mental function and focus.

Headstands strengthen shoulders, arms and core.

Inversions improve digestion. Reversing gravity on your digestive organs helps them release trapped gases and provides optimal blood flow to these all-important digestive organs.

Improved circulation occurs with a headstand practice. Because the heart constantly has to pump blood upward to the brain, the headstand gives the heart a rest and reduces unnecessary strain. Plus, while in headstand de-oxygenated blood is able to flow more easily from the extremities to the heart.
